      In computer networking, devices and systems often need seamless communication across different segments, and this is where Network Bridges play a vital role. A network bridge is a hardware or software device that connects multiple network segments, enabling them to function as a single unified network. By filtering traffic and forwarding data only where it is needed, bridges reduce unnecessary congestion and improve overall performance. They operate at the data link layer (Layer 2) of the OSI model, making decisions based on MAC addresses to determine the appropriate destination of data packets.

      The importance of Network Bridges becomes evident in larger setups where dividing networks into manageable sections helps maintain efficiency. Unlike hubs, which broadcast data to all connected devices, bridges ensure that information reaches only the intended recipient. This selective forwarding improves bandwidth utilization and strengthens network security. In addition, network bridges can connect different types of media, such as linking wired Ethernet with wireless networks, ensuring smooth interoperability between diverse systems.

      Today, with advanced switches largely replacing traditional bridges, the concept remains integral to networking fundamentals. Switches essentially act as multi-port bridges, offering higher efficiency and faster communication. However, the role of Network Bridges in laying the foundation for modern networking cannot be overstated, as they introduced intelligent traffic management and segmentation that continues to influence network design.
