after it fell into a swimming pool while going for a drink.</font></p><p><font style=”font-size:1.2em;”>Lucy, a nine-year-old giraffe, is thought to have broken into the Leopard’s Den set in South Africa after getting thirsty.</font></p><p><font style=”font-size: 1.2em;”>Stephen Tompkinson, who plays vet Danny Revanion in the ITV1 drama, was leaving the set when he was told about the accident and returned to help with the rescue.</font></p><div class=”clear”> </div><div class=”thinCenter”> <noscript> </noscript> <p class=”imageCaption”>That’s a tall story: Lucy the giraffe, who is 14 months pregnant, had to be rescued after falling into a swimming pool on the set of ITV’s Wild at Heart show in South Africa</p></div> <p><font style=”font-size:1.2em;”>The crew had to abandon their first attempt to rescue Lucy – draining the pool and building steps from sandbags so she could walk up them – because of the risk of her slipping and falling over.</font></p><p><font style=”font-size:1.2em;”>Firefighters were called as the crew worked into the night and she finally walked out of the pool unscathed when a trench was dug and she was coaxed out with food.<br /></font></p> <p><font style=”font-size:1.2em;”>The show’s producer, Adam Friedlander, said: ‘We are not 100 per cent sure how she fell into the pool but we think she may have been drinking from it and, with her head being too low, became disorientated and fell in.</font></p><p><font style=”font-size:1.2em;”>’The animals on the reserve roam free and we are of course very mindful of their safety and try to interfere with their habitat as little as possible.</font></p><p><font style=”font-size: 1.2em;”>’However, accidents can happen and it appeared Lucy had managed to squeeze through the fence before falling into the pool.'</font><br /></p><div class=”clear”> </div><div class=”thinCenter”> <noscript> </noscript> <p class=”imageCaption”>Popular: Wild at Heart is a family drama set in the African bush, which previously starred Stephen Tompkinson and Amanda Holden</p></div> <p><font style=”font-size:1.2em;”>Lucy, who was rescued when the cast were in South Africa in September to film a new series, is around 14 months pregnant with the offspring of Hamley – an on-screen favourite who was killed by a lightning bolt last year.</font></p><p><font style=”font-size:1.2em;”>Mr Tompkinson said: ‘It was such a bizarre sight – as soon as I walked around the corner all I could see was this great neck sticking out of the pool.</font></p><p><font style=”font-size:1.2em;”>’She remained really calm throughout the whole thing and, after draining the pool and digging a trench for her to walk up, she emerged, allbeit awkwardly, out of the pool unharmed.'</font></p><p><font style=”font-size: 1.2em;”>Giraffe pregnancies usually last around 15 months.</font></p> <div class=”clear”> </div> <p></p></div>
